Rosie Nampitjinpa

Yilpikarri
2021

This painting includes designs associated with Yilpikarri, a rockhole represented by the circle in the painting. In the Tjukurrpa, a group of ancestral women passed through Yilpikarri during their travels. Along their way, they collected Mangata (Quandong Fruit), a traditional bush food much sought after in this region. The Mingari Tjukurrpa (Thorny Devil Lizard Dreaming) is also associated with this place. When Mingari camped here, she was heavily pregnant with many eggs, and despite experiencing a lot of pain, she was unable to give birth. Her stomach eventually cracked open and all of her eggs rolled out. These eggs formed the rocky hills at this site. The lines in the painting represent the tracks Mingari, as well as the tali (sandhills) in this area.
